About Nicola

Nicola's Artistic Journey

A love of the English countryside and our rich folk heritage

Nicola Ward Tonkinson is a British figurative artist who was raised in the picturesque Lancashire countryside. As the daughter of an artist and antiques dealer, her childhood was steeped in an appreciation for English Georgian and Victorian art. As a young girl, she spent the seasons exploring the lanes and woodland by her home, filling her sketchbooks with drawings and watercolours. Inspired by the equestrian studies of George Stubbs and the naive livestock paintings of the 19th century, the artist continues to this day to provide a link with the English tradition for painting folk scenes of the rural hearth and home, and the familiar comforts of the bucolic life.
